Cut Resistance Standards For Protective Gloves

The Industry Standards Working Group has made significant advances in testing, measuring and standardizing the cutting protection performance of gloves and garments. In order to facilitate the selection of mechanical (cutting) protective clothing, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the European Union (EU) have developed cutting protection standards as the basis for selection.

 

ANSI/ISEA 105 ("US National Standard for Hand Protection") is an American standard. According to ANSI/ISEA 105, gloves and other cutting protective clothing are rated according to a consistent digital rating scheme for mechanical, thermal, chemical, flexibility and other performance criteria. ANSI/ISEA is self-regulating, but has strict guidelines for testing methods.

 

EU Standard EN 388 ("Mechanical Hazard Protective Gloves") has rated protective gloves and other cutting protective clothing in terms of puncture resistance, tear resistance, blade cutting resistance and abrasion resistance, and the relevant information is shown in the pictogram. Despite regulatory compliance in the European Union, this standard is globally recognized and global personal protective equipment manufacturers can display EN 388 ratings on product packaging, literature and websites.

 

Since EN 388 and ANSI/ISEA 105 use completely different test methods and are rated according to different digital performance levels – EN 388 has a rating range of 1 to 5, but ANSI/ISEA 105 has a rating range of 0 to 5 — EN 388 The ANSI/ISEA 105 cutting performance rating is not interchangeable. When discussing product performance levels, it is important to know which standard is being used. When comparing products, always use the same cutting test method/standard for comparison.
